Location:
- Toronto (recommend set up a shortcut for efficiency)
- Select Add a Shortcut → City → Toronto → Startup Show.
- Select your new shortcut (this should appear on all your connected IPVanish Devices).
- Alternative: Connect to Specific City Server in Toronto or a US City.
Basic Troubleshooting & Tips
1. Confirm the VPN is actually on
- Voice-search “IPVanish” → app opens → top-left reads Connected.
- In Settings ⚙ → Auto-connect on launch = ON (prevents silent drops).
2. Quick “reset” that fixes 80 % of glitches
a) Disconnect → Re-connect to the same location (Toronto).
b) If Live returns but VOD is blank, switch to the City Server in Toronto node or hop to a US City ie Kansas City and retry.
3. Cache & reboot
- Startup Show › Settings › Clear Cache → OK → Sign in.
- Reboot the router and streaming stick once a week; it flushes RAM and stale DNS.
4. Speed check
- Run the in-app speed test—look for ≥ 20 Mbps.
- Slower? Change server or time-slot; throttling peaks 7–11 p.m.
5. Protocol swap
Use when | Try this |
---|---|
Live and VOD fail | WireGuard → OpenVPN + Scramble |
Only Live buffers | Stay on WireGuard (fastest) |
(OpenVPN + Scramble hides VPN fingerprints; WireGuard is raw speed.)
6. Location rules
- Toronto = only Canadian city Apollo accepts (others show “403 Forbidden – Do Not Use VPN”).
- U.S. cities work, but some VOD hosts blacklist them—good for Live TV fallback.
- Outside North America = big speed loss, not recommended.
7. Split-tunnel optional apps
Settings ▸ Split Tunneling → exclude Netflix, Prime Video, etc. to avoid their VPN blocks without disconnecting Apollo.
Confirm Internet Throttling:
What is Internet Throttling?
Majority of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will flag and slow down your internet speeds—especially during high-demand streaming. Although it’s rarely admitted, it can happen anytime. A properly configured VPN will protect your data and privacy.
Apollo Group TV: There are two feeds going to the Apollo Servers being the live TV and On Demand, either one of the feeds or both feeds can be flagged and blocked. Generally live TV is being flagged and blocked, generally during peak hours.
Also note not all VPN’s are compatible (ie. Express VPN is NOT) as well more VPN’s lack the features offered by IPVanish and overally have less locations to select from.
Confirm Internet Throttling
Running a detailed speed test within the Apollo Group TV application can often detect throttling. However, in some cases, the issue may occur higher up the network chain, making it less obvious through local testing.
Open Your Streaming App (e.g., Startup Show or Apollo Group TV).
Navigate to Settings > Launch Speed Test (DETAILED)
Results:
Live TV Server; and VOD Server will be listed; and the coloumn to the right, Download Speed will show for each category.
- If the download speed for Live TV or VOD shows “0” or is significantly low (under 5 mbps)
- If you see a “Bad IP” message.
These indicators confirm throttling on your connection (network).
Confirming a Successful Connection
Ensure there is a positive speed test for all columns. If you have a zero or a fraction of a download speed than your connection is compromised. Below is a picture with IPVanish Connected. More Details.

Alternative: Connect To A US City Specfic Server
1. Select a US City (ie Kansas); then Select, Favourite.
2. Reselect the US City (ie Kansas); then Select, View Servers.
3. Select a Server, (low Ping and low load) (ie. MCI-A18) and will auto-connect.
- Open, Startup, Go live TV channel, see if channel works.
- If not, go settings of startup, clear the cache, try again.
- If not, simply select the next US City Server (ie. MCI-A19)
Examples of US City Specific Server Options:
- Western Canada
(British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan)
- Seattle – Closest major U.S. node to Vancouver & much of BC. (SEA-C01; SEA-C05; SEA-C08)
- Denver – Useful if you’re in southern Alberta or Saskatchewan (DEN-B02; DEN-Bo3; DEN-B08)
- Central Canada
(Manitoba, Ontario—especially mid/west Ontario)
- Kansas – A viable alternative further south if Chicago is slow or congested. (MCI-A01; MCI-Ao3; MCI-A08)
- Cincinnati – Can help in southwestern Ontario areas. (CVG-B02; CVG-B17; CVG-B24)
- Eastern Canada
(Quebec, Maritime Provinces, Eastern Ontario)
- Ashburn – Another strong choice if Boston/New York aren’t stable. (IAD-B01; IAD-B16; IAD-B53)
- Boston – Great for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island. (BOS-C02; BOS-C27; BOS-C30)
*Ideal server has a low ping, and percentage; smaller city generally less congestion; majority servers will work perfectly!
